Anthropic has announced the Model Hardware Standard, a set of standardized drivers designed to let AI agents interface with and control arbitrary physical devices. The company says MHS is currently available as a research preview.

What Happened

The Model Hardware Standard provides what Anthropic describes as a common interface and common format for data sharing between devices, allowing them to communicate across a network "without needing a bespoke 'translator' program in between." According to the company, this standardized system could reduce weeks or months of experimental setup down to "hours or minutes." In a video accompanying the announcement, Anthropic Technical Staffer Alek Kemeny said the MHS effort was inspired by observing neuroscientist Arco Bast work through an experiment on memory formation at the HHMI Janelia Research Campus in Ashburn, Virginia. The system is being sold primarily as a way to help scientists streamline creating custom software integrations needed to coordinate disparate experimental components.

Why It Matters

Agentic AI systems have thus far been largely limited to text, images, code, and other digital actions taking place inside computers. Anthropic's MHS represents an attempt to extend AI agents beyond software into controlling physical laboratory equipment like rotating laser beams, microscopes, and cameras through a standardized interface rather than custom integrations.
